le bon chemin / le droit chemin

http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=2687942

-- WordReference.com

Writer 1:

15 Important Truths That Will Change How You Think About Introverts

A Nigerian acquaintance once asked me if I was worried that men would be intimidated by me. I was not worried at all.  In fact, it had not occurred to me to be worried because a man who would be intimidated by me is exactly the kind of man I would have no interest in.

-- Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
... so in a literal way, men rule the world.  And this made sense a thousand years ago because human beings lived then in a world in which physical strength was the most important attribute for survival.  The physically stronger person was more likely to lead and men in general are physically stronger.  Of course, there are many exceptions.  But today we live in a vastly different world.  The person more likely to lead is not the physically stronger person.  It is the more creative person, the more intelligent person, the more innovative person.  And there are no hormones for those attributes.

We should all be feminists - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie at TEDxEuston

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hg3umXU_qWc

I found out about this talk when I discovered that Beyoncé included an excerpt of it on her new album.  Jovonne later referenced the talk on a message that she posted on Facebook.

Here's what I found on Jovonne's message:

"In addition to the women who earn our respect and adoration for their appropriate hemlines and perfect posture, we need women who will stand out and stand up. We need women with big hair and red lipstick and hoops. We need women of defiance. We need women who sometimes cuss and shit and uncross their legs and make love but also fuck–on their own terms, for their own pleasure, without apology"

“The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action" by Audre Lorde

http://shrinkingphallus.wordpress.com/the-transformation-of-silence-into-language-and-action-by-audre-lorde/

Jovonne wrote this on Facebook:

"I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood. That the speaking profits me, beyond any other effect...

My silences had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you. But for every real word spoken, for every attempt I had ever made to speak those truths for which I am still seeking, I had made contact with other women while we examined the words to fit a world in which we all believed, bridging our differences...
What are the words you do not have yet? What do you need to say? What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day and attempt to make your own, until you will sicken and die of them, still in silence?...

And, of course, I am afraid– you can hear it in my voice– because the transformation of silence into language and action is an act of self-revelation and that always seems fraught with danger. But my daughter... said, “tell them about how you’re never really a whole person if you remain silent, because there’s always that one little piece inside of you that wants to be spoken out, and if you keep ignoring it, it gets madder and madder and hotter and hotter, and if you don’t speak it out one day it will just up and punch you in the mouth.” ...

And it is never without fear; of visibility, of the harsh light of scrutiny and perhaps of judgment, of pain, of death. But we have lived through all of those already, in silence, except death. And I remind myself all the time now, that if I was to have been born mute or had maintained an oath of silence my whole life long for safety, I would still have suffered, and I would still die. It is very good for establishing perspective...

We can learn to work and speak when we are afraid in the same way we have learned to work and speak when we are tired. For we have been socialized to respect fear more than our own needs for language and definition, and while we wait in silence for that final luxury of fearlessness, the weight of that silence will choke us.
The fact that we are here and that I speak not these words is an attempt to break that silence and bridge some of those differences between us, for it is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence. And there are so many silences to be broken." ~ “The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action" by Audre Lorde

Moving from America to Nigeria

For any American borns thinking of moving to Nigeria, here are some tips. Ill develop more over time.

1. You must have someone in Nigeria preferably a team of people invested in providing you a "soft landing". This means housing, cars, advice, generators, wifi, and time to help you get adjusted. If they live on the island, this is a plus!

2. If you are coming for a job, make sure you have a contract signed and written (preferably in stone) before you arrive. There are fraudulent companies here. Also a respectable job title in the US, might mean something completely different in Nigeria. Research well.

3. If the company is not a multi-national have well placed individuals on the ground investigate the company for you.

4. Identify friends or friends of friends who will have no problem introducing you to their friends. Lagos is one big group of cliches.

5. Pay extra for a suitcase full of every product you need and any dry goods you want. Lagos has to be one of the most expensive cities on earth. Any quality product or service will be 3-5 times more expensive here than in the US.

6. Buy bottled water and use that to wash your face and brush your teeth...after days of a peeling face, I switched to this method and realized the water quality is extremely different than US.

7. Don't be scared. Lagos at least is a safe city. Nigeria has horrible PR. Drop your pre conceived notions and keep an open mind.

creativity

http://www.trans4mind.com/quotes/quotes-creativity.html
We don't get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? So this is what we've chosen to do with our life. We could be sitting in a monastery somewhere in Japan. We could be out sailing. Some of the team could be playing golf. They could be running other companies. And we've all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it. And we think it is.

I particularly enjoyed this article because of sign No. 22:

Introverts are often better at communicating in writing than in person, and many are drawn to the solitary, creative profession of writing. Most introverts -- like "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling -- say that they feel most creatively charged when they have time to be alone with their thoughts.

"time to be alone with their thoughts" reminds me of the lyrics of Kanye West's "Power".

yam porridge

chin-chin

2 lbs (7 cups) of all-purpose flour
4 eggs
pinch of salt
2 TBsp of butter
1-1½ cup of sugar
About 1 cup of water
Vegetable oil (for frying)

1. Mix everything (add egg, then water last).
-Make sure the flour looks like big crumbs after adding eggs
   -Pour water

2. Knead the dough, keep adding water but do not make it too soft, because it is harder to cut and it joins together in frying pan

3. Sprinkle flour on cutting board and pin.

4. Roll dough flat.

5. Make sure you can work with dough.  It should be neither too hard nor too soft.

6. Put it in sieve and shake excess flour.

7. Fry on medium because it does not take long to cook.

8. Taste to make sure sugar is enough.

9. Take it out when it gets yellow because it gets darker.

paella

Temps de préparation : 30 minutes
Temps de cuisson : 30 minutes

Ingrédients (pour 6 personnes) :
- 2 gousses d'ail
- 3 tomates

Courage is admitting that you're afraid and facing that fear directly. It's being strong enough to ask for help and humble enough to accept it.

Courage is standing up for what you believe in without worrying about the opinions of others. It's following your own heart, living your own life, and settling for nothing less than the best for yourself.

Courage is daring to take a first step, a big leap, or a different path. It's attempting to do something that no one has done before and all others thought impossible.

Courage is keeping heart in the face of disappointment and looking at defeat not as an end but as a new beginning. It's believing that things will ultimately get better even as they get worse.

Courage is being responsible for your own actions and admitting your own mistakes without placing blame on others. It's relying not on others for your success, but on your own skills and efforts.

Courage is refusing to quit even when you're intimidated by impossibility. It's choosing a goal, sticking with it, and finding solutions to the problems.

Courage is thinking big, aiming high, and shooting far. It's taking a dream and doing anything, risking everything, and stopping at nothing to it make it a reality.

Simon Sinek, the Start with Why guy:
As an adult nobody looks at my skills as survival skills, they look at me and say “what a talent you have.” When we’re young, the things we learn in order to survive become our talents when we’re adults.
There’s a corollary: That talent was born out of fear. Fear of not being good enough, fear of getting bullied, fear of your world crashing down.

Until you deal with that fear, you will continue to be driven by the fear.

You have to unlock the talent from the fear that birthed the talent if you want to be able to experience your talent freely, and not be a slave to it.

Climbing the Right Ladder

http://gabebridwell.com/index.php/2011/07/18/climbing-the-right-ladder/
Why do most people not follow their bliss?  One word: fear.  We are overwhelmed by fear and primarily we are overwhelmed by the fear of what other people will think of us.

Joseph Campbell says "What will they think of me must be put aside for bliss."

One of the biggest inhibitors to following our bliss is "What will they think of me?  Am I going to look like an idiot if I follow my bliss and I fail?  Am I going to look like a fool?" -- all these different questions come into our mind.

I wrote it because I was sick of keeping all these feelings inside and not speaking up for myself, which caused a lot of resentment.

Obviously I’ve been through a lot of therapy since my last record and that’s what this is about.

What You Can Learn From The World’s Best Violinist (And His $32 Pay Day)

I liked this article because of the following comment:

Which strategy and signals work best to convey quality will differ across people, situations, and industries. How you, say, set yourself apart from the competition in an entry-level banking job may be entirely different from how you make it to the top as an software developer. But the key is to have a strategy. The bottom line is that if you’re good, you have to let others know it, because otherwise they may never have a clue -- and ignore you just like those morning commuters whisked by Joshua Bell.

Make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin to boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt. So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservation, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. If you want to get more out of life, you must lose your inclination for monotonous security and adopt a helter-skelter style of life that will at first appear to you to be crazy. But once you become accustomed to such a life you will see its full meaning and its incredible beauty.

Audrey Fleurot : « Usain Bolt est un artiste »

-- Sport&Style

I was drawn to this article because of this comment of Audrey Fleurot in particular:

Êtes-vous fascinée par un sportif en particulier ?
Ah, Usain Bolt !
