If you haven’t found your bliss yet, think back to the thing the other kids teased you about, the thing that made you different. Because often your bliss is not what others are doing or what others tell you to do. It’s individual to you. It’s your path, not anyone else’s.

-- Colleen Newvine Tebeau

The above is the first of ten thoughts scribbled by Colleen Newvine Tebeau after watching "Finding Joe".  I noted it because it indicates that individuality is essential to one's bliss.

But you guys are way ahead of the game. You already know who you are and that peace, that peace that we’re after, lies somewhere beyond personality, beyond the perception of others, beyond invention and disguise, even beyond effort itself. You can join the game, fight the wars, play with form all you want, but to find real peace, you have to let the armor fall. Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form. Risk being seen in all of your glory.

Why do most people not follow their bliss?  One word: fear.  We are overwhelmed by fear and primarily we are overwhelmed by the fear of what other people will think of us.

Joseph Campbell says "What will they think of me must be put aside for bliss."

One of the biggest inhibitors to following our bliss is "What will they think of me?  Am I going to look like an idiot if I follow my bliss and I fail?  Am I going to look like a fool?" -- all these different questions come into our mind.

Energy is a clue to developing our human resources. Human life, like all life, is simply energy. Some activities give you energy and some take energy away. If you’re doing something you love, you’re spiritually uplifted. And if you’re doing something you don’t care for, you can be physically exhausted and depressed. There’s such a difference in the energy of people who are only enduring – getting on with what they’ve wandered into – and people who really love what they do and couldn’t imagine doing anything else. People who are doing what they love to do uplift us by their own luminescence. They carry a certain energy. They’re in their element. They’re authentic. What they do isn’t just what they do; it defines them. It’s who they are.

Our lives are not linear. They’re organic. You can’t plan the life you have, but if you invest in your own talents and passions, your life changes around you. It  reconfigures. It grows into something different, something more like you.

-- Sir Ken Robinson, "organic | lifebyme"
